Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee on February 6th, 2012.  The Diamond Jubilee marks the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne following the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6th, 1952.  The only other monarch in the histories of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth realms to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee is Queen Victoria in 1987.

The Queen realms throughout the Caribbean and Commonwealth are planning a number of events to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee. Barbados will host the Earl and Countess of Wessex between February 23rd and 24th, 2012.

The Barbados Parliament is the third oldest elective Legislative in the British Commonwealth after Britain 1265, and Bermuda 1620.  In March 1989, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Barbados.  On March 9th, 1989, Her Majesty the Queen received Addresses in the Senate Chamber from both Houses on the occasion of the Commemoration of the 350thAnniversary of the establishment of The Barbados Parliament.

As the Head of State it is the duty of the Queen to formally open each new session of Parliament.  This ceremony traditionally takes place in October, November or December each year, but sometimes it can occur in a different month if there is a General Election. There are certain precautions to be observed before the Queen travels from Buckingham Palace to Parliament. Once these precautions have been taken, the Queen travels from Buckingham Palace in a State Coach to Parliament, usually accompanied by the Duke of Edinburg.

Queen Elizabeth II came to Barbados at the end of her Silver Jubilee tour in 1977.  The Queen arrived on the supersonic jet, the Concorde, which made its first landing in Barbados on the occasion.  On alighting from the aircraft she inspected a contingent of the Barbados Defence Force. It was on this visit that she knighted National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers before hundreds of Barbadians at the Garrison Savannah.

Queen Elizabeth’s visit to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center was made on May 8, 2007.  Goddard Center is the largest organisation of scientists and engineers in the United States dedicated to learning and sharing the knowledge of the Earth, Sun, Solar System and the Universe.  The visit was indicative of the long history of collaboration of the United States in the Space Program.
